The novel
In 1471, as Andalusia contracts under the Castilian advance, Zuhra leaves Granada with a promise: to build a place where those who flee can begin again. In the Rif mountains, beside Aly al-Mandri, that promise takes the name Chefchaouen.
The years turn the refugee into Sayyida al-Hurra: governor, mediator and commander of a network spanning ports, ransoms and alliances. But every form of sovereignty carries a price, especially for a woman who refuses to receive power from the hands of men.
A historical novel about exile and foundation, about communities that depend on one another, and about the fragile line between protecting a city and belonging to it.
